Scanner Holder Magnetic Barcode Scanner Holder
The best ergonomic solution is one that is affordable enough to implement in real life. This 3D-printed scanner holder uses spare magnets from our supply to attach securely to the workplace cart, providing easy-to-reach, discreet access.
Installation Location: the Foundry Makerspace in the Fine Arts Library at the University of Texas at Austin Workflow: Rhino 3D, Lulzbot 3D printer
Made-to-Order Product Design
Measurements of the cart’s edge were taken with calipers to 3D-model a custom attachment mechanism that combines the benefits of a grooved notch with the added strength of magnets.
Magnetic Attachment
Detailed measurements of the magnet allowed it to interlock with the holder without glue. This magnetic attachment keeps the holder securely on the cart while remaining easy to reposition.
3D Printed On-Premise
As the Foundry is a makerspace, we used on-site 3D printers—a LulzBot TAZ Workhorse in this case—to manufacture the design in PLA from the STL file exported from Rhino.
100% Infill = 100% Durable
Because the holder is a cantilevered structure, the 3D printing settings were adjusted to fill it with 100% PLA, leaving no gaps that could compromise the tensile strength needed for a durable cantilever.
