Scanner Holder
Magnetic Barcode Scanner Holder
The best ergonomic solution is the one affordable enough to implement in real-life.This 3D printed scanner holder uses spare magnets in our supply to securely attach to our workplace cart for easy-to-reach, discreet access to our most frequently used tool.
Installation Location: the Foundry Makerspace in the Fine Arts Library at the University of Texas at Austin
Workflow: Rhino 3D, Lulzbot 3D printer
Measurements of the cart’s edge dimensions were taken with calipers to 3D model a custom attachment mechanism that combined the benefits of a grooved notch with the added strength of magnets
Detailed measurements of the magnet piece permitted an interlocking placement into the holder without any glue. This magnetic attachment mechanism keeps the holder sturdily attached to the cart but easy to rearrange.
As the Foundry is a makerspace, we utilized our on-premise 3D printers (a Lulzbot TAZ Workhorse in this case) to manufacture the design in PLA from the STL file exported from Rhino.
As the holder is a cantilevered structure, the 3D printing settings were adjusted to fill the volume with 100% PLA, leaving no gaps that would compromise the tensile strength required for a long-lasting cantilever.
